Summer Heat Guitar Pedal

$200.00

The Summer Heat is a dynamic EQ and overdrive guitar pedal that offers powerful tone-shaping options from subtle to extreme, and anywhere in between. The “Intensity” control operates in two distinct modes: from the left to the midpoint, it functions as a standard volume control, while from midpoint to the right, it provides a 10db clean boost. The “Exposure” control acts as a clean blend overdrive. The “Morning” and “Midday” controls serve as bass and mid boost/cut controls, each with three selectable frequency ranges. Both “Morning” and “Midday” controls employ stacked gyrator circuits, doubling the boost and cut capabilities for a powerful range of sonic flexibility.

Summer Heat Explanation and History:

Back in December 2022, I picked up a used DOD Death Metal and Digitech Grunge for $50—both of which were not working properly. The Death Metal was stuck on, and the Grunge wouldn’t power up at all. From experience, I suspected the cheap footswitches were the issue. After cleaning off the nicotine smell, I replaced the switches and got both pedals working again. While digging into the schematics, I noticed how similar the two pedals were. Curious about the bass and mid circuits in particular, I breadboarded those sections on their own. That experiment took me down a rabbit hole and ultimately led to the creation of something new. Around that same time, I had been thinking about creating a companion piece for my Winter Storm guitar pedal. While the Winter Storm has a more light to medium gain structure with a Fender-style tone stack, I wanted this new pedal to have a bigger, bolder distortion character with more emphasis on bass and mids. This is how I developed the Summer Heat guitar pedal!

-The Summer Heat is a dynamic EQ and overdrive guitar pedal that features powerful tone shaping options which go from subtle to extreme and anywhere in between.

-The Intensity control acts as a clean blend overdrive. With the control at far left, the signal is completely dry, and as you turn the control up it simply increases the level of your signal until it reaches about 11 o clock position, and from this point the diodes in the signal path start to conduct and your signal becomes dirtier. As you continue to turn the control up and it reaches the far right the signal is then completely wet and you get a full-bodied overdrive.

-The Morning control serves as a bass boost and cut, and the Midday control serves as a mid boost and cut. The 12 o’clock position of each of these controls is flat. As you turn the controls to the left it begins to cut frequencies and as you turn them to the right it boosts frequencies. Each control features three selectable frequency ranges.

-Elaborating on this a little bit further, the boosting and cutting within a specific frequency range is very common in guitar pedals that have an EQ section. One way to visualize this is to imagine a rack EQ with all of the individual sliders, they usually have a boost and cut of + or – 15db with the middle being 0db.

-Now here’s where it gets interesting with the Summer Heat. What I’ve done is taken that traditional circuit and instead, tied two of them together. What this allows for is essentially a doubling of the boost and cut capabilities. So for example, if you want to cut a frequency range in a dramatic way, you can certainly do so. And because I’ve added clipping diodes to the circuit, when you boost to the extremes, it’s begins to clip the signal and it essentially allows the tone controls themselves, to become their own overdrives.

This is the forth guitar pedal in my line and I hope you’ll check this out today!
